Kotalipa

Masters of Mahamudra

Translated by Keith Dowman

From the story of the mahasiddha Santipa, spoken by his disciple Kotalipa.

"Until I received my Guru's instruction I plowed the mountainside," said Kotalipa. "Through instruction on the technique of plowing the mind I attained siddhi." Indra and his hosts invited him to the Thirty-three Sensual Paradises, but he refused to go. "It is imperative to pay homage to the Guru because the Guru is a source of grace greater than the Buddha," he told them. "As it is said in the scriptures 'the Guru is the Buddha; the Guru is the Teaching; and the Guru is the Community.' I take refuge in the Guru who embodies The Three Jewels, and I pray for his sacred blessings."
